Aurora-Eielson powerhouse

The Aurora-Eielson powerhouse is designed to provide reliable on-site energy for Eielson Air Force Base. The project is intended to improve mission readiness by adding on-site generation and giving the base greater flexibility for maintenance and operations.

• Purpose

  Oklo’s approach is designed to deliver resilient, clean power with minimal maintenance and reduced dependence on frequent fuel deliveries. Alaska’s operating conditions and energy needs make it an important location for demonstrating performance that could be applied at other remote, mission-critical sites.

• Technology and capacity

  The project is based on a smaller sodium fast reactor designed for the power requirements of the base. Total output is expected to be approximately 60 MWth of reactor heat, used to provide at least 5 MWe of electricity and 50-100 kpph (thousand pounds per hour) of steam for district heating.

• Employment and economic impact

  The project is expected to support more than 300 construction jobs during initial development. Long-term operations are expected to require around 70-80 positions supporting powerhouse operations around the clock.

  Eielson Air Force Base, approximately 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska

• Status

  Site characterization is underway. Borehole drilling and ground investigations are planned in 2026.

• Key details

  The project is intended to provide redundant, geographically separated generation to improve mission readiness and support maintenance flexibility. It is also designed to interconnect with the Eielson Air Force Base Central Heat and Power Plant for the distribution of electricity and steam.

  The Aurora powerhouse also has potential applications at other remote military bases, mining operations, and communities that currently rely on expensive, high-emission diesel generation.

• Environmental considerations

  The Department of the Air Force and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are preparing environmental reviews for the Eielson microreactor pilot, including siting and related project reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act.
